How does the PR system in New Zealand work? Do I need to secure a job in my field to get PR?
You do not need to secure a job in your field to get permanent residency (PR) in New Zealand, but having skilled employment can strengthen your application.
The typical PR process involves two steps:
- Resident Visa: You first apply for a Resident Visa, often through the Skilled Migrant Category. A job offer in a skilled role is not mandatory but can improve your points and chances.
- Permanent Resident Visa: After holding your Resident Visa for at least 2 years and showing commitment to New Zealand (such as living there), you can apply for a Permanent Resident Visa. There is no specific requirement to have a job in your field at this stage.
Immigration rules are subject to change. If you need help with your specific situation, your LeapScholar counsellor can guide you.
