Two years of biotechnology work experience changes what a university looks for in your application. Programmes that explicitly consider relevant industrial experience, rather than judging you on grades alone, are worth prioritising over ones that treat every applicant as a fresh graduate.

Why UCD and Galway Lead the Ireland Shortlist

  • UCD MSc Biotechnology: accepts Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Microbiology and Genetics degrees, and states that applicants with relevant industrial experience can be considered.
  • University of Galway MSc Biotechnology: requires a relevant biological science degree and IELTS 6.5, with 6.5 specifically in Writing and 6.0 in the other bands, so check your individual band scores before applying here.
  • TUS Biopharmaceutical Technology: a strong pick if your two years were pharma focused, since it explicitly considers relevant industrial experience alongside the standard IELTS 6.5.

Ireland vs Canada: Which Country Actually Fits Your IELTS 6.5

CountryBest universityWhy it fits IELTS 6.5
IrelandUniversity College DublinIELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each band, plus room for relevant work experience.
IrelandUniversity of GalwayWorkable, but only if your Writing band is 6.5 specifically.
CanadaUniversity of WindsorIELTS 6.5 with no more than one band below 6.0, and preference given to biotechnology work experience.
CanadaUniversity of GuelphNot workable yet. It requires IELTS 7.0 overall with 6.5 in every component.

My Advice

Get your IELTS band breakdown in front of me before you shortlist Galway or Guelph, since a 6.5 overall can still fall short of what those two specifically require in Writing or in every section. UCD and Windsor are the safer first choices precisely because they don't box you in on a single weak band.
