The PSAT, or Preliminary SAT, comes in three types, and each is meant for school students at a different level. PSAT 8/9 is for 8th and 9th graders, PSAT 10 is for 10th graders, and PSAT/NMSQT can be taken by 10th and 11th graders.

The Three PSAT Types

PSAT typeWho takes itKey points
PSAT 8/98th and 9th grade studentsChecks preparation progress as students move to high school; usually held in fall months; slightly easier than PSAT 10, with less advanced math and simpler reading passages
PSAT 1010th grade studentsChecks readiness for college admissions; usually held once in October; does not qualify students for merit scholarships
PSAT/NMSQT10th and 11th grade students (mostly 11th graders)Conducted by College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation; same testing level as PSAT 10, with more advanced math and more complex reading passages than PSAT 8/9

What Stays the Same

  • All three follow the same SAT exam syllabus, pattern, scoring, duration and rules of testing.
  • Eligibility criteria differ, because different school students appear for each one.
  • Testing dates differ, although exam centres may be common.
  • The PSAT resembles the Digital SAT in pattern and syllabus, and it works like a practice test before the main SAT.

My Advice

Pick the PSAT that matches your grade and treat it as a practice run for the SAT. Confirm the dates, eligibility and registration process on the official College Board page, since these can change.
