For a Computer Science bachelor's, the specialisation choice is fairly settled, Data Science, AI or Cybersecurity are the strongest options, so the harder decision here is genuinely the country, and that depends on whether jobs-plus-immigration or research-and-prestige matters more to you.

FactorUSAIreland
Programme depthEstablished MS Computer Science and Data Science tracks at universities such as USC, with strong research infrastructureGrowing ICT and data-analytics postgraduate offering, generally more accessible admission bar
Immigration signalNo dedicated skills-shortage list; work visa route (H-1B) is capped and lottery-based2026 Critical Skills Occupations List names ICT professionals and several data-analytics roles directly
Cost considerationGenerally higher tuition and living costsGenerally lower overall cost of a comparable master's programme

Specialisation Still Depends on Your BSc Focus

  • Computer Science or IT background: MS Computer Science, Data Science, AI/ML or Cybersecurity are all strong, well-supported routes in either country.
  • Mathematics or Statistics background: Data Science or AI/ML plays to your quantitative strength more directly than a generic Computer Science degree.
  • General or non-CS BSc: Business Analytics or Data Analytics is more accessible than a straight MS Computer Science, with several programmes specifically built for non-CS backgrounds.

My Advice

If your priority is a clearer path to working legally after the master's, weigh Ireland more heavily, its Critical Skills framework gives ICT and data-analytics graduates a defined route that the US H-1B lottery simply does not offer. If prestige and research depth matter more than settlement certainty, the USA's stronger research ecosystem is worth the added cost and visa uncertainty.
