Which master's specialisation suits a Bachelor of Arts graduate applying to USA?
A Bachelor of Arts is flexible enough that the real decision is not whether a BA can lead to a good US master's, it clearly can, but which specialisation actually converts that flexibility into a hireable, specific skill set.
Why an MPA Fits Most BA Majors Better Than a Marketing Master's
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics tracks humanities and liberal arts graduates moving strongly into education, management and government-adjacent roles, which lines up closely with what a Master of Public Administration or Public Policy trains for. For BA majors in Political Science, Sociology, History or Economics specifically, this route into government, NGOs, policy analysis and international organisations tends to draw more directly on existing coursework than a Marketing or Communications degree would.
- Political Science, History, Sociology, Economics majors: MPA or MPP is usually the strongest continuation.
- English, Journalism, general BA majors: Marketing or Communications is often the more natural fit instead.
- Psychology majors: Social Work or Education tracks build more directly on that coursework than public policy does.
When Marketing or an MBA Beats an MPA
If your BA leaned toward writing, media, psychology or business-adjacent electives, and your goal is corporate rather than government or NGO work, a Marketing, Communications or eventually MBA path (after some work experience) will usually serve you better than forcing a policy angle onto a non-policy background.
My Advice
Do not choose a specialisation based on what sounds prestigious. Match it to your actual BA coursework and your realistic post-graduation goal, whether that is government and policy work, corporate communications, or a people-focused field like education or social work.
