It is worth being direct about one thing first: none of these masters degrees lead to practising medicine in the United States, since that requires the separate USMLE, ECFMG certification and residency pathway, so this decision is really about which non-clinical career your MBBS should feed into.

Epidemiology, Health Informatics or Health Policy: What Fits Your Goal

  • Interested in research, population health or clinical studies: MS Epidemiology or MPH, for example at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai or Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
  • Drawn to technology, data or digital health: MS Health Informatics, with George Mason University's program carrying STEM classification for international students.
  • Aiming at hospital administration rather than clinical work: MPH Health Policy and Management, a stronger fit than an MBA at only 12 months of experience.

My Advice

If your long-term goal is actually to practise medicine in America, none of these three options gets you there, and I would have a completely different conversation with you about USMLE and residency instead. Assuming you want to build a career using your MBBS outside clinical practice, my honest ranking at only 12 months of experience is Epidemiology first for research-minded profiles, Health Informatics second if you are genuinely willing to learn Python and SQL, and Health Policy and Management only if hospital administration is the clear goal.
