Which countries outside the USA accept SAT scores for university admissions including the UK and Canada?
Over 85 countries outside the USA accept the SAT, including the UK, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong, parts of Europe, Australia, New Zealand, India and the Middle East. Score expectations rise sharply from around 1350 in Canada to 1480 and above at Singapore's top universities.
The SAT is far more portable than most students assume, with over 85 countries accepting it for admissions, prerequisites or scholarships. In many places it is test-optional and simply strengthens your file, but in competitive regions like Singapore it becomes a genuine filter, so always check the exact policy on your target course page.
Where Your SAT Score Is Accepted
| Country or region | Top universities | Typical score range |
|---|---|---|
| Canada | Toronto, UBC, McGill | 1350 to 1500+ |
| United Kingdom | Oxford, Cambridge, KCL | 1450 to 1500+ |
| Singapore | NUS, NTU, SMU | 1480 to 1560+ |
| Hong Kong | HKU, HKUST, CUHK | 1420 to 1540+ |
Other Regions Worth Knowing
| Region | How the SAT is used |
|---|---|
| Continental Europe | Bocconi, Aalto and IE University accept it to bypass local exams |
| Australia and New Zealand | Converted to an ATAR equivalent for international applicants |
| India | Accepted via DASA and ISA schemes at BITS, IIIT Hyderabad, Ashoka |
| Middle East | NYU Abu Dhabi and CMU Qatar use it at American-style campuses |
My Advice
Do not assume test-optional means the SAT is useless. A strong score can lower the number of AP exams a UK university asks for and can unlock merit scholarships elsewhere. Decide your target countries first, then aim for the highest band in that range, because a 1480+ opens Singapore and India's premier schools while comfortably covering Canada and Australia too.
