Start preparing in the second year of your engineering degree, not in the final year when coursework pressure peaks and application deadlines are approaching simultaneously. Starting in second year gives you at minimum 18 to 24 months before applications are due, which is enough time to take the GRE multiple times if the first attempt does not produce the score you want, and enough time to take the test when you are well prepared rather than under time pressure.

• Register for the GRE through the ETS website at the beginning of your preparation, not when you are ready to sit, the act of registering creates a deadline that most self-directed learners need to stay consistent.
• The standard GRE syllabus covers algebra, arithmetic, permutation and combination, data interpretation, and verbal reasoning.
• The ETS website itself provides the most accurate and comprehensive preparation materials including official mock tests, and downloading and working through these is more efficient than buying third-party material that may not reflect the actual test format.
