Arizona State University, for example, states its final Spring 2027 I-20 issuance date for students outside the US is 11 December 2026, ahead of classes beginning 11 January. That means even a December application acceptance leaves very little room for visa processing before term starts.

When Fall 2027 Is Actually the Better Target

If your real goal is the broadest possible choice of US master's programmes rather than starting as early as physically possible, Fall 2027 is worth serious consideration, since many US master's degrees, including several at Duke's engineering school, only admit through Fall rather than offering a Spring entry at all.

My Advice

In my experience, students hear "Spring intake deadlines run into December" and relax, without checking their specific programme's actual date, which can be months earlier. Confirm your target programme's exact international deadline this week, not just the general Spring 2027 window, and start your SOP, transcripts and test scores now regardless of which university's deadline you are working against. If your target field mostly runs Fall-only admissions, do not force a Spring application just to start sooner.
