What is the GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate) amount required for Canada student visa?

The GIC for a Canada student visa is CAD 22,895 for a single applicant outside Quebec, plus a bank fee of CAD 150 to CAD 200. The SDS fast-track is permanently discontinued. All students apply via the standard stream, where a GIC is the most trusted proof of living expenses.

A Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) is a fixed-term bank deposit that Canadian visa officers use to verify that you can support yourself financially during your studies. While the Student Direct Stream that once made GICs mandatory has been discontinued, GICs remain the single most reliable method to demonstrate your first-year living expenses to IRCC. Here is exactly what you need to know before purchasing one.

GIC Financial Requirements for 2026 Applications

Requirement Component Amount (CAD) Approximate Amount (INR)
Base GIC Deposit (Single Applicant, Outside Quebec) CAD 22,895 ~Rs. 14.40 Lakhs
Bank Processing Fee CAD 150 to CAD 200 ~Rs. 9,000 to Rs. 12,000
Total Transfer Target ~CAD 23,095 ~Rs. 14.52 Lakhs

Additional Requirements and Dependant Multipliers

Scenario Total Funds Required (CAD)
Single Applicant (Outside Quebec) CAD 22,895
Applicant with 1 Dependent ~CAD 28,502
Applicant with 2 Dependents ~CAD 35,040
Applicant with 3 Dependents ~CAD 42,543
Quebec Province Separate financial matrix managed by Quebec provincial immigration - does not follow IRCC thresholds
IRCC-Approved Banks Scotiabank, CIBC, ICICI Bank Canada, SBI Canada Bank, Simplii Financial

My Advice

Purchase your GIC from one of the IRCC-approved institutions listed above - do not use any other bank, as unapproved GICs are rejected outright. Scotiabank and ICICI Bank Canada are popular with Indian students because they have established processes and Indian-language support. Start the process at least 6-8 weeks before you plan to submit your visa application, as international wire transfers and bank verification can take 2-3 weeks. Keep the GIC receipt and all bank correspondence carefully - you will need these documents for your visa interview.

The GIC is mandatory only if you apply through the Student Direct Stream (SDS) for a Canadian study permit. If you apply via the regular study permit process, the GIC is not compulsory. Having a GIC can still strengthen your application by showing clear proof of funds.

The GIC must be purchased from a participating Canadian bank and held in Canada, as the funds are released to you there in installments for your first year’s living expenses.
