What is the difference between Course 16 and Course 16-ENG if I want to study aerospace engineering at MIT?
Course 16 is a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering with broad training and four advanced subjects across at least three areas. Course 16-ENG is a B.S. in Engineering with an aerospace foundation and six subjects in a chosen concentration. Both are four-year paths with 180 to 186 units in the major.
Course 16 gives broad aerospace training, while Course 16-ENG keeps the aerospace foundation but lets you build a concentration in another area. Both are four-year undergraduate paths.
Course 16 and Course 16-ENG Compared
| Feature | Course 16 | Course 16-ENG |
|---|---|---|
| Official degree | B.S. in Aerospace Engineering | B.S. in Engineering |
| Main focus | Broad training across aerospace disciplines | Aerospace foundation with a flexible concentration |
| Advanced coursework | Four subjects across at least three areas | Six subjects within a chosen concentration |
| Best for | Students wanting a traditional aerospace engineering degree | Students combining aerospace with another technical field |
| Accreditation | ABET aerospace engineering criteria | ABET general engineering criteria |
| Units in the major | 180 to 186 units | 180 to 186 units |
What You Will Study
- Course 16 covers design, analysis and operation of aircraft, spacecraft and aerospace systems, including materials and structures, fluid dynamics, propulsion, controls and computation.
- Course 16-ENG shares the aerospace foundation but adds room to concentrate in areas such as software, autonomy, sustainability, transportation or engineering management.
- Students apply to MIT first and choose their major after the first year.
My Advice
Decide based on how narrow you want your degree to be. If aerospace is your only goal, Course 16 is the direct path. If you want to blend aerospace with software, sustainability or management, Course 16-ENG leaves more room to do that.
