What does my spouse need to get a family immigration permit if I hold a Norwegian study permit?
A spouse of a student with a Norwegian study permit must apply separately for a family immigration permit. UDI lists requirements such as a valid marriage, plans to live together, identity documents, the fee, at least one year of studies left and meeting the income requirement.
Your spouse needs to apply for a separate family immigration permit, since it is not the same as your study permit. Generally you must have, or have applied for, a study permit and have at least one year of studies left.
UDI requirements for a student's spouse
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| Relationship | A valid marriage or registered partnership |
| Living arrangement | Plans to live together in Norway |
| Documents | Valid identity documents |
| Fee | Payment of the family immigration application fee |
| Student's status | Must have or have applied for a study permit, with at least one year left of studies |
| Income | Must meet the applicable income requirement |
Income requirement and processing
UDI currently shows an income requirement of NOK 368,683 (approx INR 37.16 L) per year before tax for a student reference person. Depending on the case, it can be met through employment income, some student loans or grants, and money the student or applicant holds. The family application is handled separately from the study permit, and UDI notes it does not always have capacity to process both at the same time.
My Advice
Check the income rule early, because it is often the deciding factor for students. Plan for the family application to take its own time and avoid assuming it will move with your study permit. Confirm the latest requirements on the UDI website before you apply.
