What are the changes in New Zealand's PR rules and fees for international students?
New Zealand has recently updated its Permanent Residency (PR) pathways and fees for international students.
- New PR pathways: From August 2026, two routes are available under the Skilled Migrant Category - one for skilled migrants with at least five years of relevant work experience (including two years in New Zealand at 1.1x median wage), and another for trades/technician roles with a Level 4+ qualification and four years of experience (including 18 months in New Zealand at or above median wage). - Post-Study Work Visa (PSW): Starting November 2026, a new Short-term Graduate Work Visa offers up to six months of open work rights to help graduates find employment and transition to an Accredited Employer Work Visa. Eligibility for PSW has also been extended for some qualifications. - PR application process: You must first secure a Resident Visa - typically by getting a job offer in a Green List occupation or meeting skilled migrant criteria. After two years on a Resident Visa and showing commitment to New Zealand, you can apply for a Permanent Resident Visa. - Visa fees (subject to change): Student Visa - NZD 850 (including application, levy, and conservation/tourism fee). Permanent Resident Visa - NZD 315. Additional costs may apply for medicals, police checks, and insurance.
