Can I use my PTE score for both UK study and UK immigration or PR?

No - different UK immigration routes require different PTE tests. PTE Academic UKVI covers your student visa only. For Skilled Worker Visa or settlement (ILR/PR), you need PTE Home, a completely separate test. PTE Academic in either version is not accepted for work visas or permanent residence applications.

No - different UK immigration routes require different PTE tests. PTE Academic UKVI covers your UK student visa only. For post-study immigration routes such as the Skilled Worker Visa or settlement (ILR/PR), you need PTE Home, which is a completely separate test. PTE Academic (either standard or UKVI) is not accepted for work visas or permanent residence applications.

Graduate Route: No English Test Required

The UK Graduate Route visa allows students to stay and work in the UK for up to 2 years for UG and PG graduates (for applications made before 1 January 2027) or 18 months (from 1 January 2027), while PhD students retain 3 years. The Graduate Route does not require a new English language test. Your student visa already demonstrated your English ability. You simply apply for the Graduate Route after completing your studies.

My Advice

This is one of the most misunderstood aspects of UK immigration for international students. Many people assume that once they have a PTE UKVI score for their student visa, they are covered for all future UK visa applications. That is not correct. If your plan is to stay in the UK after graduation on the Skilled Worker route, you will eventually need PTE Home as well - but that is a decision you make when you have a job offer and are ready to switch visa categories. For now, as a student, focus exclusively on PTE Academic UKVI for your student visa. The Graduate Route bridge requires no new English test, which gives you 18-24 months after graduation to find a sponsored role and plan the next step.
