What is the post-study work visa duration in Ireland or the UK after completing a master's degree?
More expert answers
After completing a master's in the UK, you can get a post-study work visa (Graduate Visa).
- 2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026
- 18 months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027
This visa lets you work at any skill level without a job offer but cannot be extended beyond its set duration. Visa rules are subject to change.
Post-study work visa durations differ by country and qualification:
- Ireland:
- Honours Bachelor's (Level 8): 12 months
- Master's/PhD (Level 9/10): Up to 24 months (12 months initial + possible 12-month extension)
You must apply within six months of your final results from a recognized Irish institution. Total time as a student plus post-study work visa is capped at seven years (Level 8) or eight years (Level 9/10).
- UK:
- Bachelor's/Master's: 2 years (if you apply by 31 Dec 2026), 18 months (from 1 Jan 2027)
- PhD: 3 years
Visa rules and durations are subject to change.
