How many years of study are required to complete a full degree in the UK to be eligible for a work permit route?

This question usually comes from students assuming they need a full three year bachelors before any post study work route opens up, and that assumption is not accurate for the UK Graduate visa.

Why a Longer Degree Is Not the Requirement

The Graduate visa, the UK's main post study work route, does not require you to have completed a bachelors degree first. It is based on completing an eligible course at a qualifying UK institution, and a one year masters degree on its own is sufficient. You do not have to complete a three year bachelors in the UK before your masters counts.

How the 12-Month Study Rule Actually Works

• Course longer than 12 months: you need at least 12 months of Student permission during which the study actually took place in the UK.
• Course of 12 months or less: you generally need to complete the full course in the UK.
• Two year masters programmes: at least 12 months of the course must be studied in the UK to remain eligible.

In practice this means a bachelors degree of three years, a one year masters degree, or a longer PhD of three to four plus years can each independently open the Graduate visa route, as long as the specific study period condition above is met for that course.

The 2027 Change to Post-Study Duration

If you apply for the Graduate visa on or after 1 January 2027, the post study permission for bachelors and masters graduates drops from 2 years to 18 months. PhD and doctoral graduates continue to receive 3 years regardless of when they apply. The Graduate visa itself is not a permanent work route, so after it expires you would generally need to qualify for another route, such as the Skilled Worker visa, to remain in the UK for work.

Do not choose a longer UK degree purely to chase a longer visa; a one year masters gets you the same 2 years of work permission as a three year bachelors would, so pick your course length based on your actual academic and career goals, and instead spend the time you save researching which UK employers are likely to sponsor a Skilled Worker visa once the Graduate visa period ends.
