What Extension Actually Means Here

Your US employer or programme sponsor can file another Form I-129 on your behalf, but this does not let you exceed the 15-month maximum Q-1 stay. In other words, an extension within Q-1 status only adjusts how your existing time is structured, it does not add extra months beyond the ceiling.

After Your 15 Months Are Up

• Departure requirement: You must leave the US once your Q-1 status period ends.
• One-year bar on reapplying: You generally need to remain outside the US for at least 1 year before you become eligible for another Q-1 programme.
• Grace period for travel: Q-1 regulations allow up to 30 additional days after your programme ends purely for travel arrangements, but you cannot work or participate in programme activities during those days.

Your visa stamp's validity in your passport is a separate thing from your authorised period of stay in the US.
