How long can I stay and work after studying in the USA, Canada, the UK or Germany?
The USA offers 12 months of OPT, plus 24 for STEM graduates. Canada offers up to 3 years (PGWP). The UK gives 2 years after a bachelor's or master's if applied by 31 December 2026 (18 months from 2027) and 3 after a PhD. Germany allows up to 18 months.
Post-study work visa length differs a lot across these four countries. The USA gives 12 months of OPT, Canada up to 3 years, the UK 18 months to 3 years and Germany up to 18 months.
Post-study work visa duration
| Country | Usual duration | Extension available? |
|---|---|---|
| USA | 12 months (OPT); 24 more months for eligible STEM graduates | Yes, through the STEM OPT extension |
| Canada | Up to 3 years (PGWP) | No direct extension; other work permits may be available |
| UK | 2 years if applied by 31 Dec 2026, 18 months from 1 Jan 2027 (bachelor's or master's); 3 years (PhD) | No Graduate Route extension; you can switch to other visas |
| Germany | Up to 18 months (job search residence permit) | You can switch to a work permit or EU Blue Card |
Renewal and switching rules
- USA: OPT cannot be renewed after the standard period, but eligible STEM graduates can apply for the 24 month extension.
- Canada: the PGWP generally cannot be extended, but you may apply for other work permits if eligible.
- UK: the Graduate Route cannot be extended, but you can switch to another visa category.
- Germany: the job search permit is not extended beyond the allowed period, but you can move to a work permit.
My Advice
Do not choose a country on visa length alone. Think about how you will convert your stay into a longer work route, and remember that rules change with immigration policy. Always check the official immigration website of your destination country for the latest details.
