How is the TEF exam laid out for me section by section, and how long is each part?
The TEF has four sections. Reading typically has 50 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, Listening 60 in 40 minutes, Writing 2 tasks in 60 minutes and Speaking 2 tasks in 15 minutes. These figures can vary by version, so check the official TEF page for the latest pattern.
The TEF (Test d'evaluation de francais) is a French language proficiency test used to assess your skills for immigration and study purposes in Canada. It covers four skills, each with its own timing and task type.
TEF Exam Pattern
| Section | Duration | Questions | Task type or focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading | 60 minutes | 50 | Multiple-choice (articles, ads, emails, everyday documents) |
| Listening | 40 minutes | 60 | Multiple-choice (dialogues, news, work calls, scenarios) |
| Writing | 60 minutes | 2 | A formal letter and an opinion or argumentative essay |
| Speaking | 15 minutes | 2 | Information exchange and a role-play or debate |
Level Requirement
The source notes that at least level 7, which corresponds to B2 on the Common European Framework for Languages, is required. The level you need depends on your purpose and the authority asking for it, so confirm it with them.
Formats, question counts and timings vary by TEF version and can be updated, so check the official TEF page for the latest pattern.
My Advice
Practise each section under timed conditions, because the Reading and Writing blocks give you the same 60 minutes but ask very different things of you. Confirm the level your application needs before you book.
