How does the PR point system work in New Zealand compared to Canada?
New Zealand and Canada both use points-based systems for skilled immigration, but they differ in structure and focus.
- New Zealand: The Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) requires you to earn at least 6 points. Points are based on your qualifications, income relative to the New Zealand median wage, and occupational registration (where required). You can also earn points for skilled work experience in New Zealand. The system emphasizes local qualifications and work experience.
- Canada: The Express Entry system uses the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) with a maximum of 1,200 points. Points are awarded for age, education, language proficiency, Canadian work experience, and additional factors like provincial nomination or having a sibling in Canada. As of March 25, 2025, job offers no longer add CRS points. The system is competitive, with cutoffs that vary for each draw.
Key differences: New Zealand focuses more on local education and work experience, while Canada places greater weight on language skills and a broader range of profile factors.
