Does my application route to IIT differ a lot from applying to MIT as an Indian student?

The two routes are quite different. IIT does not accept direct applications, while MIT lets you apply directly through its own portal with your documents and the application fee.

Process Comparison

StageIITMIT
Direct applicationNot acceptedAccepted through the MIT portal
UG routeRegister and qualify for JEE Main, then JEE Advanced, then register for JoSAA counselling if you meet the cutoffApply on the portal with all relevant documents and the application fee
PG routeGATE qualification is a must, and those meeting the cutoff can applyApply through the respective department pages

What This Means for You

  • The IIT process is lengthy because it needs several qualification steps.
  • The MIT process is also difficult, but it is a one-time application that includes everything.
  • Seat allocation at IIT happens through counselling, not through a direct application.

My Advice

Decide early which route you are preparing for, because the exam preparation for IIT and the application work for MIT are very different. Cutoffs and procedures change, so check the official IIT and MIT pages for the latest steps.
