Do I need to choose between PTE Academic at a test centre and PTE Academic Online, and how do they differ?
PTE Academic at a test centre uses in-person invigilation and gives you full control of the environment. PTE Academic Online is remotely proctored at home with less environment control but wider access. Confirm that your institution recognizes the online version.
The two PTE Academic options differ mainly in where you sit the test and how it is supervised. For most students, the test-centre version is the more widely recognized choice. Rules can change, so check the official PTE page and your university.
Test Centre and Online Compared
| Aspect | Test centre | Online |
|---|---|---|
| Invigilation | In-person at the test centre | Remote proctoring at home |
| Environment | Full control | Less control |
| Access | Reduced access cited due to the pandemic | Wider access |
Which to Choose
- The test-centre version is the more widely recognized method.
- A controlled setting at a centre can reduce stress.
- For the online test, make sure your institution recognizes it and that you have the right equipment.
My Advice
Ask your target universities first whether they accept PTE Academic Online. If any hesitation exists, choose the test centre, and if you go online, test your equipment well before the exam date.
