Do I need a study permit for a Canadian course shorter than 6 months?
For a Canada course under 6 months, a visitor visa is generally enough, but you cannot work. Programmes of 6 months or longer need a study permit from a Designated Learning Institution, and post-secondary co-op or internship students need only the study permit, not a separate co-op work permit.
If your Canadian course runs under 6 months, a visitor visa is generally enough, but you cannot work. Once your programme reaches 6 months or more, you need a study permit from a Designated Learning Institution.
Which permit you need by course length
| Course type | Permit needed | Work allowed |
|---|---|---|
| Under 6 months | Visitor visa | No |
| 6 months or more at a DLI | Study permit | Up to 24 hours per week off campus during term, full-time in scheduled breaks |
| Co-op or internship programme | Study permit (no separate co-op work permit for post-secondary students) | Based on the co-op terms |
If you need a study permit
- Get a Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution.
- Gather your passport, statement of purpose, transcripts and proof of funds.
- Take an English test if your college asks for one, usually around 6.0 IELTS or higher.
- Pay CAD 150 (approx INR 10,176) for the permit and CAD 85 (approx INR 5,766) for biometrics, roughly CAD 235 (approx INR 15,942) in total.
- Budget around 8 to 12 weeks for a standard decision, and apply early since there is no fast track.
My Advice
Confirm your course length in writing with the college before choosing your visa route, and check that the institution is a DLI if you plan to work. If you might extend your studies or add a co-op term later, apply for the study permit from the start.
