A blocked account ("Sperrkonto") is a mandatory requirement for international students applying for a German student visa. It proves you have enough funds to cover your living expenses during your studies.

- Deposit amount: You must deposit €11,904 (covering €992/month for 12 months) into the blocked account before your visa application.
- Visa application: After depositing, you receive a "Sperrbestätigung" (confirmation document) to submit with your visa application.
- Monthly withdrawals: Once in Germany, you can withdraw €992/month for living expenses after registering your residence.
- How to open: You can open a blocked account online with approved providers. The process includes identity verification and transferring the required funds. Start this at least 4 - 6 weeks before your visa appointment.
- Funds security: The money stays in your name. If your visa is rejected or you leave Germany early, the unused amount is refunded.
- Alternatives: Scholarships or a formal financial guarantee from a sponsor in Germany may be accepted, but only at the embassy’s discretion.

Blocked account rules and required amounts are subject to change.
