As an Indian student, what expenses in Australia, New Zealand, or Poland can an education loan cover for me?
Yes. Following the Indian Banks Association's Model Educational Loan Scheme, Indian lenders typically fund tuition, hostel, exam and lab fees, travel, insurance, books, and reasonable living expenses for Australia, New Zealand, or Poland, with New Zealand requiring NZD 20,000 a year in living funds.
The eligible expense categories stay essentially the same across all three countries since they come from the same Indian banking framework; what actually changes destination to destination is how much you need to demonstrate for the visa, not what the bank is willing to fund.
What the IBA Model Scheme Covers
The Indian Banks Association's Model Educational Loan Scheme for overseas study lists tuition and hostel fees, examination, library, and laboratory fees, overseas travel expenses, required insurance, books and equipment, a computer where the course requires one, and other course related expenses such as maintenance fees, study tours, project work, thesis costs, and exchange program expenses as eligible items. Reasonable lodging and boarding can also be considered for students living outside institutional accommodation. Some categories carry specific limits under the framework; for example, caution deposits and similar items can be capped around a 10 percent tuition fee condition, and combined books, equipment, computer, and other specified expenses can be capped around 20 percent of tuition, though individual banks retain discretion to increase these caps.
- Core covered expenses: tuition, hostel, exam and lab fees, travel, insurance, and books across all three destinations.
- New Zealand specific requirement: Immigration New Zealand requires NZD 20,000 a year in demonstrated living funds, and explicitly accepts an education loan sanction letter as evidence.
- Visa related and return flight costs: bank specific; confirm directly whether your lender includes these before finalizing your budget.
Why the Country Changes the Amount, Not the Categories
Australia, New Zealand, and Poland all draw from the same eligible expense list on the Indian bank side, but each country's own immigration authority sets separate financial evidence requirements for your visa. New Zealand's requirement of NZD 20,000 a year for living costs, in addition to tuition, is one of the more clearly documented examples, and Immigration New Zealand specifically states that an education loan sanction letter counts as acceptable evidence of funds. Do not assume, however, that an education loan means unlimited living expense coverage; your bank still assesses the course, university, total estimated costs, and your family's repayment capacity before finalizing the sanctioned amount, and disbursement is often staged against your university's own fee schedule.

My Advice
Ask your bank explicitly which of the IBA's specified expense categories your particular loan product includes, since not every lender applies the full model scheme identically, and some trim categories like study tours or exchange program costs even though the framework technically allows them. Get your total cost of education letter from your target university early, since New Zealand, Australia, and Poland all expect that documentation to support both your loan application and your visa's financial evidence requirement.
