Are there any problems with studying in UK or New Zealand for work permits and post-study jobs for a PhD?

Both the UK and New Zealand offer post-study work visas, but there are important differences and recent changes to consider.

- UK: The Graduate Route visa lets you stay and work for up to 2 years after completing your degree (longer for PhD graduates). You can also switch to the Skilled Worker visa if you find a qualifying job. Eligibility depends on completing an approved course.

- New Zealand: The Post Study Work Visa currently allows up to 3 years of work, but from 16 Nov 2026, a new Short-term Graduate Work Visa will grant only 6 months of open work rights before you must switch to an employer-sponsored visa. Eligibility and duration depend on your qualification and study details.

Visa rules and job market conditions are subject to change. For detailed guidance based on your program and timeline, connect with your LeapScholar counsellor.
