Are dependents allowed to accompany students on PGW programs in Canada given recent market conditions and protests?
Yes, dependents can accompany students on Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) programs in Canada. Your spouse or common-law partner may be eligible for an open work permit, and children can study as dependents.
However, as of September 18, 2024, spouses or partners of PGWP holders can only apply for an open work permit if the PGWP holder is working in a skilled occupation (TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3) in specific sectors like health care, sciences, or education.
From November 1, 2024, new PGWP applicants must also meet minimum language proficiency - CLB 7 for university graduates, CLB 5 for college graduates. These requirements are subject to change.
