Will adding a placement year to my master's degree in the UK increase my post-study work visa duration beyond 2 years, if I apply before January 1, 2027?

Why Adding a Placement Year Does Not Add Visa Time

UK Immigration Rules Appendix Graduate treats an integral, assessed work placement as part of your eligible master's course, so it does not disqualify you from the Graduate Route. However, the rules calculate your work visa entitlement from the qualification level you hold (bachelor's or master's versus PhD) and the date you apply, never from how many months your course actually took. A two-year master's with a one-year placement still produces the standard master's-level entitlement, not an extra year on top.

The Only Date That Actually Matters

If your placement pushes your graduation, and therefore your Graduate visa application, past 31 December 2026, you receive 18 months even though you began your master's while the 2-year rule was still in force. The clock starts on submission, not enrolment.

What Else You Still Need

• University sign-off: your institution must notify the Home Office that you completed the course before you can apply.
• UK-study requirement: you must have spent the required portion of your course studying in the UK, not remotely.
• Successful completion: the placement itself must be integral and assessed, not an informal internship added outside your curriculum.

My Advice

In my experience, students add a placement year because it strengthens their CV, not because they expect a longer visa, and that is the right way to think about it. If keeping the full 2-year Graduate visa matters to your plans, work backwards from 31 December 2026 and check whether your university will have processed your results and completion confirmation in time to submit before that date. If the timeline is tight, have a backup plan for an 18-month window, since a few weeks either side of the deadline makes a real difference to your work rights.
