Will a 7/10 CGPA stop an Indian economics or science graduate from getting into a good master's program abroad in material science or a related field?
A CGPA of 7 out of 10 does not close doors at most master's programs internationally. For programs outside the most elite tier, which require 8.5 or above for serious consideration, a 7 is a functional academic record that will not prevent admission. What matters far more at the master's application stage is the coherence of the story told in the application: why this field, what experiences have shaped this direction, what the candidate plans to do with the degree, and whether the application demonstrates genuine interest and preparation rather than a generic desire to study abroad.
• A 7 CGPA with a clear professional narrative, relevant extracurricular experience, and well-crafted application essays frequently outperforms an 8.5 CGPA with a vague or generic application in programs where holistic evaluation is practised.
• The exceptions are highly competitive research programs at top-ranked institutions where CGPA is used as a first-round filter, for those programs, a 7 may be screened before the application is read.
• But the range of strong, internationally recognised master's programs in material science and engineering where a 7 CGPA is competitive is substantial.
