Which research fields does the SINGA scholarship cover for a PhD in Singapore?
The SINGA scholarship funds only Biomedical Sciences, Physical Science and Engineering. If your PhD research is in social sciences, humanities, economics, business or law, SINGA is not available, and you should look at university-specific funding such as NUS, NTU, SMU or SUTD awards.
SINGA funds only three areas: Biomedical Sciences, Physical Science and Engineering. If your research sits elsewhere, you will need a different source of funding.
SINGA fields and alternatives
| Your research area | Funding route |
|---|---|
| Biomedical Sciences, Physical Science, Engineering | SINGA, jointly run by A*STAR, NUS, NTU and SUTD |
| Social sciences, humanities, economics, business, law | University-specific funding; SINGA does not apply |
University-specific options
- NUS Research Scholarship: tuition plus a monthly stipend, open across every discipline.
- NPGS at NTU: highly competitive and open to any field.
- SMU PhD Scholarship: a natural fit for business and law applicants.
- SUTD President's Graduate Fellowship: tuition plus stipend for design and technology research.
My Advice
Check your field against the SINGA list before you spend time on its application. If you fall outside it, move straight to the university awards and match them to your department.
