Which master's specialisation suits a graduate in Mass Communication applying to UK or USA with 4 years of work experience?
Four years of experience changes what a masters should do for you. Instead of another broad communication degree, it should add strategy, leadership or a commercially valuable skill on top of what you have already practiced, which is why Strategic Communication and Digital Marketing outrank a generic Media Studies degree here.
Strategic Communication Fits a Corporate or PR Career Path
- Leads to: corporate communications, public relations, brand strategy and public affairs roles, often at a managerial level given your experience.
- Where: LSE's MSc Strategic Communications and Society and University of Liverpool's Strategic Communication MSc are two current UK options.
Digital Marketing Fits If Your Experience Leans Commercial
- Best for: candidates whose 4 years already touched social media, content, campaigns or branding.
- Where: Manchester Metropolitan's MSc Digital Marketing Communications and Lancaster's Digital and Social Media Marketing MSc both combine communication theory with commercial digital skills.
Communication Management Suits a Move Into Leadership
If your 4 years already involved some team or project responsibility, a Communication Management specialisation is designed to push you toward managerial roles rather than individual-contributor communication work, which is a more natural fit than restarting with a junior-level Media and Communications degree.

My Advice
In my experience, candidates with a few years of experience get the most value from a masters that lets them specialise rather than generalise again. Pick Strategic Communication if you want to move toward leadership and brand strategy, and Digital Marketing only if your actual day-to-day work has already been hands-on digital or campaign execution.
