Eight years of financial-management experience puts you closer to typical MBA cohort seniority than to an entry-level finance master's, and that seniority is exactly what changes the recommendation. Where a fresh graduate benefits from a narrow Master of Finance, someone at your stage gets more career upside from a broader, leadership-oriented degree that still lets you specialise in finance electives.

Why an MBA Outranks a Standalone Finance Master's Here

  • Experience threshold: Canadian MBA programmes such as McGill's Desautels MBA set a minimum work-experience bar, and 8 years clears it comfortably, which is not true of most Master of Finance intakes built for fresh graduates.
  • Leadership positioning: An MBA targets finance-manager, strategy or corporate-leadership roles, matching where 8 years of experience naturally points a candidate next.
  • Elective flexibility: You can still specialise in finance, analytics or strategy within an MBA rather than committing to one narrow track.

MBA vs Master of Finance for an Experienced Candidate

My Advice

In my experience, candidates with 8 years of experience sometimes still default to a Master of Finance because it sounds more technical, but that undersells the leadership track record you have already built. If your current role is closer to banking, investment analysis or treasury than general management, Rotman's Master of Finance is a reasonable backup, since it is explicitly built for working finance professionals rather than fresh graduates.
