Most English graduates default to an English Literature MA simply because it's the most obvious continuation of their undergraduate subject, without weighing that the UK offers several adjacent master's routes built around a specific career outcome rather than continued literary study. Which of those is better depends entirely on whether academic depth or post-study employability is the actual priority.

An English degree opens far more UK master's routes than most students assume, but the routes diverge sharply on outcome. A traditional English Literature MA is the easiest academic continuation, while Digital Humanities, Publishing or TESOL each aim at a distinct, more specific career rather than keeping your options generically open.
