Which master's specialisation suits a graduate in Computer Science applying to the UK?
UK entry-level tech hiring has actually tightened, with a government report showing a 27% year-on-year drop in entry-level software-engineer hiring as of April 2026, so the specialisation you choose should account for that shift, not just for general CS demand.
AI/Machine Learning: Where the UK's Own Skills Gap Data Points
- Data point: the UK's 2026 AI labour-market research found 97% of surveyed organisations reported at least one AI skills gap, with technical skills particularly prominent.
- Fit: suits graduates comfortable with Python, linear algebra, probability and algorithms.
Cybersecurity: A Strong Alternative Backed by International Postgraduate Demand
- Data point: non-UK and non-EU students made up 67% of cybersecurity and computer-science postgraduate students in 2022/23, showing an established pathway for international applicants.
- Careers: Security Analyst, Security Engineer, Penetration Tester, Cloud Security Engineer.
Why I'd Combine Software Engineering With Cloud, Not Study It Alone
- Data point: entry-level software-engineer hiring fell 27% year-on-year as of April 2026, per a UK government-published analysis.
- Better pairing: Software Engineering plus cloud, distributed systems and DevOps modules is a stronger bet than a programme that's essentially undergraduate coding repeated.

My Advice
Don't choose a specialisation just because it's currently fashionable; the quality of the university, the modules, the projects and your own portfolio matter as much as the title on your certificate. If your maths isn't a strength, I'd seriously weigh Cybersecurity over AI/ML rather than forcing yourself through a heavily mathematical programme you'll struggle to finish strong.
