Which master's specialisation suits a graduate in BSN applying to USA or UK?
The biggest decision for a BSN graduate is not which specialisation sounds best, but which country's registration pathway you can realistically clear first. A master's degree in either country builds on your nursing license; it does not replace the process of getting registered to practise there.
Why Registration Comes Before Specialisation
- USA: as an internationally educated nurse, you must satisfy the nursing board requirements of the state where you intend to practise, and US boards generally use the NCLEX-RN as part of that process.
- UK: the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has a specific pathway for nurses trained outside the UK, including a qualification assessment and, for some applicants, a Test of Competence.
- Master's titles can mislead: an MSc in a nursing subject is not automatically a route to UK nursing registration, since some are pre-registration courses and others are post-registration or advanced-practice courses.
Three Named Routes Compared
| Route | Country | Best If |
|---|---|---|
| MSN, Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) | USA | You want the broadest patient population and maximum clinical advancement |
| MSc Advanced Clinical Practice or Advanced Nursing Practice | UK | You are already working toward NMC registration and want to progress clinically |
| Nursing Informatics or MPH | USA or UK | You want healthcare technology, research or management rather than bedside practice |
Steps To Take Before You Apply
- Confirm your target state or NMC pathway first: your Indian BSN and registration status need to be checked against that specific pathway before you pick a programme.
- Choose robust clinical placements: since you have no prior work experience, prioritise programmes with strong supervised practice.

My Advice
Do not select a specialisation purely because it sounds high-paying. In my experience, an Indian BSN graduate's licensure and registration eligibility matters far more than the master's title itself. If your priority is maximum clinical career advancement, lean USA and an FNP or PMHNP route; if you specifically want to work as a nurse in the UK, prioritise NMC registration first and choose your master's around that status rather than the other way round.
