Eight years of ECE work experience is substantial enough that the specialisation choice should follow your actual job history rather than a generic ranking, and IELTS 6.0 narrows the field further since several strong UK communications-engineering programmes ask for 6.5. That combination is why Embedded Systems, with its wider IELTS 6.0 acceptance in Germany, ranks ahead of Communications Engineering here.

Why Embedded Systems Fits an 8-Year ECE Profile

  • IELTS 6.0 acceptance: Ravensburg-Weingarten University of Applied Sciences lists IELTS 6.0 as sufficient for its English-taught Electrical Engineering and Embedded Systems master's.
  • Experience conversion: Firmware, microcontrollers, automotive electronics or industrial electronics work over 8 years maps directly onto an Embedded Systems specialisation.
  • Broad entry background: The programme accepts electrical engineering, electronics and computer science undergraduate degrees, not just a narrow ECE-specific one.

My Advice

In my experience, candidates with a strong telecom or wireless background sometimes force themselves toward Embedded Systems purely because of the IELTS threshold, and that undersells genuine communications experience. If your 8 years are specifically in telecom, RF or 5G work, I would still consider retaking IELTS toward 6.5 to unlock UK Communications Engineering programmes such as Birmingham's, since they are a closer match to that background.
