The right specialisation for you actually hinges less on your BCom degree and more on what your 18 months of work experience has been in. If that experience already sits in finance, banking or accounting, a straight MSc Finance can be the stronger, more coherent choice than switching into analytics. If your work has been in sales, operations, IT or general business support, Business Analytics gives you the clearest career upgrade because it adds a scarce technical skill set on top of your existing commerce foundation.

Why Business Analytics Is the Default Recommendation

  • Low entry barrier: NTU's MSc Business Analytics in Singapore accepts applicants from any bachelor's discipline, with work experience preferred but not mandatory.
  • Broad landing zone: leads to Business Analyst, Data Analyst, BI Analyst or Product Analyst roles across finance, retail, technology and consulting.
  • Builds on commerce: your accounting and business fundamentals give you context that pure computer science graduates often lack.

When Finance or FinTech Fits Your Profile Better

  • Finance route: choose MSc Finance if your 18 months are already in banking, audit, investment or corporate finance, since switching fields would waste that experience.
  • FinTech route: a strong middle ground in Singapore specifically, given its financial services and technology ecosystem, but programs vary widely in how much coding they actually require.

My Advice

In my experience, the biggest mistake BCom graduates make here is choosing Business Analytics purely because it sounds fashionable, without first checking whether they actually enjoy working with data. Spend a weekend doing a free SQL or Power BI tutorial before you commit close to a year's tuition to it. If your 18 months of work experience is genuinely finance heavy, do not feel pressured to abandon that path just for the analytics label; a focused MSc Finance can be the safer and more coherent choice.
