Which English language proficiency test should I take for my target universities in UK/Germany for a Master's?
For master's applications to universities in the UK and Germany, the best English language proficiency test to take is the IELTS Academic. It is widely accepted by most universities in both countries and is approved for UK student visa purposes. German universities also commonly accept IELTS, usually requiring a minimum overall band of around 6.5.
TOEFL iBT is also accepted by many universities, but IELTS is preferred for UK visa applications, and some German universities may not accept TOEFL for visa purposes. Other tests like Cambridge English (C1 Advanced, C2 Proficiency) and Pearson PTE Academic may be accepted by some institutions, but acceptance varies.
The Duolingo English Test is generally not accepted for UK or German student visa purposes, so it’s safer to avoid it.
If your previous degree was taught entirely in English, you might be eligible for a test waiver with a Medium of Instruction certificate, depending on the university’s policy.
