With flexible preparation time, the real risk is not failing to prepare enough, it is testing too late to meet the earliest application windows, particularly for Singapore programs that open several months before a UK deadline typically would.

A Month by Month Prep Timeline

• Now through autumn: shortlist your target universities and check each program's exact English requirement, including whether your Indian degree's medium of instruction could exempt you.
• Following few months: prepare seriously, starting with a diagnostic or mock test to establish your baseline score.
• Around January: sit your first official IELTS or TOEFL test, giving yourself several months of buffer before typical deadlines.
• February through April: retake if needed, then finalise and submit applications with your confirmed score.

Why January, Not Later, Is the Safer Target

IELTS scores are generally treated as valid for two years, comfortably covering applications submitted throughout the following year, so testing early does not waste your result. The more important reason to avoid waiting is that some Singapore programs open unusually early: NTU's coursework admission guide has listed windows opening as early as 1 October the year before an intake for certain programs. UK master's deadlines vary considerably by university, but several open well before a spring test date would allow you to apply with a confirmed score. Note also that TOEFL iBT changed to a 1 to 6 scoring scale from 21 January 2026, so double check which scale a given university's published requirement refers to.
