When I take the dMAT for my German Master's, what does the Core Module cover?

The dMAT Core Module is the common aptitude section of the Digital Master Test and is identical for every candidate, whatever their German Master's program. It does not test undergraduate syllabus. It checks thinking ability, pattern recognition, mental calculation and logical reasoning under time pressure.

The Core Module is the same for every candidate, irrespective of their German Master's program. It checks aptitude instead of what you learnt in your undergraduate syllabus.

What the Core Module Checks

SkillDetail
Thinking abilityGeneral reasoning
Pattern recognitionSpotting patterns
Mental calculationHow you do calculations in your head
Logical reasoningAnswering under time pressure

Why It Matters

  • The dMAT sits within the APS process for selected fields in Germany.
  • German universities use the Core Module as a level playing field, so aptitude scores stay comparable across colleges and grading systems.
  • Check the official dMAT and APS pages for the latest rules.

My Advice

Since the questions are aptitude based, practise reasoning under time pressure rather than revising your degree notes. Confirm on the official pages whether your field needs the dMAT.
