What steps do I follow on the Universitaly portal to apply to study in Italy?
Universitaly works in four stages: choose and verify your course, pre-enrol online with your qualifications, get evaluated by the institution which issues a Letter of Eligibility for Enrolment, then book a student visa appointment. Check the official Universitaly and institution pages for the latest process.
Universitaly follows a fixed sequence set by MUR, sometimes called the 10-step path to studying in Italy. In practice it condenses into four stages.
The Four Stages
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| Step 1: Choose and verify | Shortlist a course and institution, then confirm entry requirements directly with the institution |
| Step 2: Pre-enrol | Create a Universitaly account and complete the online pre-enrolment form with your qualifications |
| Step 3: Get evaluated | The institution evaluates your application and issues a Letter of Eligibility for Enrolment |
| Step 4: Apply for a student visa | Use the letter to book a student visa appointment, then apply for the Italian Permit of Stay after arrival |
Planning Notes
- The standard Italian academic year begins in autumn, though exams can be taken until April of the following year.
- Use this when planning your application timeline.
- Verify entry requirements directly with the institution before you pre-enrol.
My Advice
Work backwards from the autumn start so you have time for the evaluation and visa appointment. Confirm each step on the official Universitaly and institution pages.
