Indian applicants often treat the SOP and the F-1 visa as one combined paperwork exercise, but they are prepared for two different audiences at two different stages, and mixing up what each one requires is a common source of last-minute scrambling before a visa interview.

Documents for Your University Application and SOP

• Academic records: transcripts, marksheets and degree or provisional certificates.
• Test scores: IELTS, TOEFL or PTE, plus GRE or GMAT where the program requires it.
• The SOP itself: explaining your academic background, goals and reasons for choosing the specific program.
• Supporting material: resume or CV, letters of recommendation, and any work, internship or research documentation relevant to your application.

Documents for the F-1 Visa Interview

• Core forms: valid Indian passport, DS-160 confirmation page, Form I-20 from your SEVP-certified university, and your SEVIS I-901 fee receipt.
• Financial evidence: bank statements, education loan sanction letter, or scholarship and assistantship letters covering tuition and living costs.
• Academic proof: transcripts, degree certificates and relevant test scores, echoing what you already submitted to the university.
• Intent evidence: documentation supporting your planned study and, where relevant, ties to India that support your stated intent to return after your studies.

Where Students Get Confused

The SOP is generally a university-admission document rather than a required F-1 visa document. A consular officer will not ask to read your SOP; instead they verbally probe the same ground, your academic plans, your funding and your circumstances, during the interview itself. The current U.S. Department of State fee for an F visa application is $185, separate from the SEVIS I-901 fee.

My Advice

Practice explaining your SOP's content out loud before your interview, since consular officers are really testing whether your spoken answers match the written narrative your university already approved. A mismatch between what you wrote and what you say under a short interview is a more common rejection trigger than any single missing document.
