What other countries should I consider for my master's degree besides Germany, and what are the benefits and differences of studying there?
Every alternative to Germany trades away something Germany offers cheaply, low or no tuition, so the real comparison is which trade-off, higher cost, a different language requirement, or a shorter visa window, you are actually willing to accept.
Country-by-Country Trade-Offs Against Germany
| Country | Main advantage over Germany | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Canada | Master's graduates are exempt from the PGWP field-of-study restriction | More expensive overall; immigration rules have tightened |
| Netherlands | English-taught programs without leaving continental Europe | Higher tuition for non-EU students; housing can be difficult |
| Ireland | English is sufficient for study and work, EU access retained | Smaller job market; tuition and accommodation can be expensive |
| United Kingdom | Most master's degrees take only 1 year | Graduate visa drops to 18 months for applications from January 2027 |
Canada: The North American Alternative
Canada is particularly interesting because master's graduates are not subject to the PGWP field-of-study restriction that applies to some other Canadian programs, and a 2026 change removed the provincial attestation letter requirement for master's and doctoral applicants at public institutions outside Quebec. It suits CS, AI, data science, engineering, and business, but is meaningfully pricier than Germany.
Netherlands and Ireland: Staying Closer to Europe
The Netherlands offers an orientation-year residence permit after graduation and strong programs in engineering, CS, AI, and finance, though housing pressure is a genuine problem in major cities. Ireland gives you up to 24 months post-study for Level 9 graduates and removes the language barrier entirely, at the cost of higher tuition and living expenses than Germany's public universities.

My Advice
Do not compare these countries on tuition alone. Calculate total cost as tuition plus two years of living expenses plus visa and travel costs, minus any scholarship, then separately weigh post-study work rights and how large your specific field's job market actually is in each country, since that combination tells you more than a simple cost ranking ever will.
