What language proficiency levels are there for German language learning?
German language proficiency is categorized from A1 (beginner) to C2 (proficient) under the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR):
- A1 (Beginner): Basic everyday expressions and simple phrases.
- A2 (Elementary): Simple, routine communication and information exchange.
- B1 (Intermediate): Understands and produces straightforward texts; manages most travel situations.
- B2 (Upper-Intermediate): Understands complex texts; interacts fluently with native speakers.
- C1 (Advanced): Expresses ideas fluently and spontaneously.
- C2 (Proficient): Understands almost everything heard or read; expresses ideas very precisely.
These levels are assessed through exams such as the Goethe-Zertifikat, TestDaF, DSH, and telc.
