Time disappears faster than every single student expects. A one-year UK master's is nominally twelve months but in reality closer to seven or eight months of active instruction once you account for the Christmas break, the Easter break, and the dissertation period where formal teaching has ended. The first semester passes quickly, and the combination of adjustment, coursework, and exploration means that many students arrive at the second semester realising they have not yet started the job search, the scholarship applications, or the networking they planned to do from day one.

• The most useful mental model is to treat each month as irreplaceable.
• Societies, job applications, LinkedIn outreach, career events, and industry networking should all be active from the first week, not deferred until you feel settled, because settled often means term two.
• The Graduate Route visa begins the moment your studies formally end, and the clock on your post-study window starts whether or not you are ready to use it.
• Students who use the degree period actively, for both academic development and career positioning, enter the Graduate Route in a significantly stronger position than those who treat the degree as preparation for the job search that will come afterward.
