What is the difference between IELTS and TOEFL exams?
IELTS and TOEFL are both widely accepted English proficiency tests, but they differ in format and style.
- IELTS offers both paper-based and computer-based options, with a face-to-face Speaking section. Scoring is on a 0 - 9 band scale.
- TOEFL is mainly computer-based, with Speaking responses recorded on a computer. Scoring is out of 120 (0 - 30 per section).
IELTS features a mix of British, Australian, and some North American accents, while TOEFL mainly uses American English. IELTS uses varied question types; TOEFL focuses on multiple-choice and integrated tasks.
Both tests are accepted by most universities. Choose based on your comfort with the format, accent, and your target university’s requirements.
