What is the best intake for starting a master's in the UK next year to have the widest course options and the longest post-study work visa?
September or October is the intake with the widest UK course choice, but it will not give you a longer Graduate visa than January; applications made on or after 1 January 2027 get 18 months of post-study work regardless of when the course started.
Students often bundle two separate variables into one decision, course choice and visa length, and assume the intake that wins one also wins the other. Under the current rules those two variables have actually come apart, so optimizing for one no longer optimizes for both.

Why the Old September Advantage No Longer Applies
- The 2-year Graduate visa now depends on application date, not intake month: the longer period applies only where the Graduate visa application itself is made by 31 December 2026.
- From 1 January 2027 onward, it is 18 months for everyone: a master's that starts in January or in September both land in the 18-month bracket if the visa application happens after that date.
- Course choice is still real: UK universities publish substantially more postgraduate programs for the September intake than for January or February starts.

My Advice
If maximum choice of universities and courses is genuinely your priority, target September or October, but do not choose it specifically because you think it preserves a 2-year Graduate visa; that advantage no longer applies under the current rules. Immigration rules can still change again before you actually apply, so treat 18 months as the figure that holds today, not a permanent guarantee, and revisit it closer to your application date.
