What is the actual difference between the dMAT and the GRE for a Germany Master's application, and do I need both?
They serve entirely different functions and are reviewed by different offices, so clearing one does not reduce your need for the other. The dMAT is an APS documentation checkpoint via g.a.s.t.; the GRE is a university admissions input via ETS. Check both independently.
The dMAT and the GRE serve entirely different functions and are reviewed by entirely different offices, so clearing one does not reduce your need for the other. Whether you need both, just one, or neither depends on your degree field and your target university's own GRE policy.
dMAT vs GRE at a glance
| Criteria | dMAT | GRE |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | APS documentation checkpoint | University admissions input |
| Administered by | g.a.s.t. | ETS |
| Submitted to | APS India, with your documentation | Directly to each university |
| Who needs it | Engineering/Commerce/Business grads, Summer 2027+ | Only programs that explicitly ask for it |
| Fee (India) | ~Rs.16,500 (€150) | ~Rs.22,550 |
| Replaces the other? | No | No |
Why one never substitutes for the other
The dMAT is an APS documentation checkpoint, administered by g.a.s.t., submitted to APS India as part of your documentation file, and required specifically for Engineering, Commerce/Accounting/Finance/Economics, or Business/Management graduates applying from Summer Semester 2027 onward.
The GRE is a university admissions input, administered by ETS, sent directly to each university's own admissions portal or through Uni-Assist, and required only when a specific program explicitly asks for it. Check both independently rather than assuming one substitutes for the other.
My Advice
Check both requirements independently for every university on your shortlist; never assume clearing the dMAT lowers the bar on a university's own GRE requirement, or vice versa. These are two separate reviewers looking at two entirely different things.
