What is a blocked account for European countries, and how much money needs to be blocked for living expenses?
A blocked account (Sperrkonto) is a special bank account required by Germany for most international students. You must deposit a set amount to prove you can cover your living expenses, with monthly withdrawals allowed after arrival.
- Germany: As of 2026, you need to deposit €11,904 in a blocked account. This allows you to withdraw €992/month for 12 months.
- Other European countries: Most do not require a blocked account. Instead, you show proof of funds via bank statements, scholarships, or sponsorships. The required amount varies by country.
Blocked account requirements and amounts are subject to change.
