What exactly is the APS certificate and why is the BMAT exam mandatory for it now in Germany for a Master's?
The APS certificate (Akademische Prüfstelle) is a mandatory document for Indian students applying to study in Germany. It verifies your academic credentials and confirms they meet German university standards. You cannot proceed with your university application or student visa without this certificate.
Starting June 2026, the Digital Master Test (dMAT) is also required for certain Master's applicants. If your undergraduate degree is in Engineering, Commerce, Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Business/Management and you plan to start a graduate program in Germany from summer 2027 onwards, you must take the dMAT. This test assesses your academic aptitude and is a separate step from the APS certificate.
Both the APS certificate and dMAT are now essential for select Master's applications.

There is no required BMAT score for Germany - German universities do not use the BMAT exam for admissions.
Instead, Indian students must obtain the APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) certificate, which is a document verification process with no numeric score. The APS is a pass/fail requirement.
For some master's programs starting from Summer 2027, the new Digital Master Test (dMAT) may be required, but this is separate from BMAT and applies only to certain courses.
